Puppy Vaccination & Health Schedule

A Healthy Start for Every Austin Dachshund

Giving puppies a healthy beginning is one of our top priorities. At Austin Dachshund, we follow an age-appropriate veterinary care program and keep detailed records of vaccinations, deworming, and routine health checks.

Because vaccination needs can vary based on a puppy’s age, health, location, and veterinarian’s recommendations, your puppy’s exact schedule should always be confirmed with your veterinarian.

6–8 Weeks

At this stage, puppies may receive their first core puppy vaccination when recommended by their veterinarian, along with routine deworming and a general wellness examination.

  • Age-appropriate core puppy vaccination

  • Routine deworming

  • General health and wellness examination

  • Health monitoring and developmental assessment

10–12 Weeks

As puppies continue growing, their veterinarian may recommend additional core vaccine doses to build protection.

  • Follow-up core vaccination

  • Continued parasite prevention as recommended

  • Wellness examination

  • Review of overall growth and development

14–16 Weeks

Additional vaccinations may be recommended during this stage, depending on the puppy’s previous vaccinations and veterinary guidance.

  • Final puppy-series core vaccination when appropriate

  • Rabies vaccination according to applicable laws and veterinary guidance

  • Wellness assessment

  • Review of ongoing preventive care

Continuing Care at Home

Once your puppy joins your family, we strongly recommend establishing care with a trusted veterinarian. Your veterinarian can create an individualized schedule for future vaccinations, parasite prevention, wellness examinations, and other preventive care.

You will receive your puppy’s available health and vaccination records to help your veterinarian continue their care.

Typical Puppy Vaccination Timeline

Vaccination schedules can differ, so the following should be viewed as a general guide rather than a substitute for veterinary advice.

AgeTypical Care
6–8 WeeksFirst core puppy vaccine may be administered; deworming and wellness check
10–12 WeeksAdditional core vaccine dose; parasite prevention and wellness care
14–16 WeeksAdditional/final puppy-series dose when appropriate; rabies according to local requirements
After 16 WeeksOngoing vaccinations and preventive care based on your veterinarian’s recommendations

Protecting Your Puppy Before Full Vaccination

Young puppies are still developing protection against infectious diseases. Until your veterinarian confirms that your puppy can safely interact in higher-risk environments, use caution around areas where many unknown or unvaccinated dogs may gather.

This can include dog parks, boarding facilities, pet-store floors, and other heavily trafficked areas. Ask your veterinarian which activities and socialization opportunities are appropriate for your puppy during this important stage.

Deworming & Parasite Care

Puppies commonly receive routine parasite care while growing. Our puppies receive age-appropriate deworming and parasite management based on veterinary guidance.

Treatment timing and medications can vary depending on the puppy and veterinary recommendations. Your puppy’s health records will include the treatments that have been provided so your veterinarian can determine the appropriate next steps.
